Until 27th November 1902 the value of the Thai Baht was based on the value of 15 grams of silver. The value of this currency fluctuated against other currencies based on a gold standard. Prior to 1880 the Thai baht (THB) was fixed at eight THB to the one British pound (GBP) this fell to 10 THB to 1 GBP later in this decade. Before the first world war Thailand pegged its currency against the British pound. It then moved on to the Japanese yen during the second world war at par. From 1956-1973 the Thai baht was pegged against the US dollar.
Interestingly before 1860 flat coins was we know today were not used in Thailand. Instead bars of metal that were thicker in the centre where bent round into a circle and used as currency.
