Guatemala, officially the Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America. It is bordered by Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, Belize, the Caribbean, Honduras and El Salvador. With an estimated population of around 16.6 million, it is the most populated state in Central America. Its capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
1960 to 1996 saw Guatemala enduring a bloody civil war, fought between the US-backed government and leftist rebels. The UN negotiated peace, and since then Guatemala has witnessed economic growth and successful democracy. However, there remains high rates of poverty, crime, drug trade, and instability. Guatemala hosts an abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems.
The quetzal was introduced in 1925 replacing the peso. Until 1987, the quetzal was pegged to and domestically equal to the United States dollar and before the pegging to the US dollar, it was pegged to the French franc as well, since the quetzal utilized the gold standard.
The name Guatemala originates from a word meaning place of many trees, and Guatemala's motto is the Country of Eternal Spring.
The Guatemalan Quetzal is named after the beautiful Quetzal bird, which is the national bird of Guatemala. In ancient Mayan times, the feathers of this bird were used as currency.
