On the 1st January 1993 Czechoslovakia peacefully separated into the two countries that we know today; the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The koruna was introduced as the currency of the Czech Republic on the 8th February 1993.
One Koruna is equal to 100 haleru. In 2003 10 and 20 haleru coins were removed from circulation and this was followed by the removal of the 50 haleru coin in 2008.
Koruna banknotes were available in the following denominations 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 Koruna until 2008 when the 20 koruna note was dropped. The 50 Koruna banknote was next to be removed from circulation in 2011.
The capital Prague’s GDP is more than double that of the rest of the Czech Republic and accounts for over 21% of the country’s GDP which is similar to figures in the UK. Here London produces 22% of the United Kingdom’s gross domestic product.
The Czech Koruna is the official currency of Czech Republic. The ISO 4217 currency code for the Czech Koruna is CZK.
