Brunei is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is located on the island of Borneo in South East Asia. It shares a border with Malaysia and also faces the South China Sea in the North.
As a protectorate of Britain in the late 1800s, Brunei used the Straits dollar from 1906, the Malayan dollar from 1939 and the Malaya and British Borneo dollar from 1953. In 1967 it started using its own dollar, the Brunei Dollar, due to the formation of Malaysia and Singapore gaining independence. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or B$, to distinguish it from other dollar denominations. It can be subdivided into 100 sen or cents. The Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 1967 made the Brunei dollar interchangeable with the Singapore dollar. Therefore, the Brunei dollar is accepted in Singapore as customary tender and vice versa. Brunei is famous for its bronze teapots, which were once used as tender in barter trade along the north coast.
