The currency of Bahrain is the dinar, which can be subdivided into 1000 fils. The dinar replaced the Gulf rupee in 1965, at 10 rupee = 1 dinar. The Kingdom of Bahrain (its official title) is an Arab constitutional monarchy in the Persian gulf which sits in between Saudi Arabia and the Qatar Peninsula. Bahrain is a country made up of 33 islands in total, with the main island being Bahrain Island. There is a 25km causeway which joins Bahrain to the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. In the late 1800’s Bahrain was a protectorate of the United Kingdom, but later declared independence in 1971. Now it is known for its garment manufacturing industry, oil production and beautiful natural scenery.
The name Bahrain means “the two seas”. The meaning of the two seas has been historically disputed, but is commonly now thought to mean the two bays east and west of the island.
